What is Hastelloy?
Hastelloy is a term used to describe nickel metal that has been alloyed to increase corrosion resistance. This is primarily done through the addition of molybdenum and chromium. There are many grades of Hastelloy, with each grade having a different chemical makeup to be optimized for a specific set of properties.
Hastelloy outperforms other specialty metal products like Incoloy in extremely corrosive situations because it often contains significant amounts of both molybdenum and chromium. The general workability is also improved by the inclusion of molybdenum. Additionally ductile and simple to produce and mold, Hastelloy alloys are.
Hastelloy grades generally have the following characteristics:
- Excellent corrosion resistance
- Good weldability
- Resistant to oxidizing agents and acids
How is Hastelloy made?
Hastelloy is a metal alloy that is created by mixing raw materials while they are still liquid at high temperatures. There are different classes, each with a unique chemical makeup. A mixture may have nickel as the remaining component and up to 25% chromium, 5% to 30% molybdenum, and 0% to 30% iron. Depending on the grade, additional additions may include titanium, carbon, tungsten, and chromium.
Hastelloy: Properties, Uses, and Benefits
Given Hastelloy is designed to have outstanding corrosion resistance, it makes a great choice for any moderate to severely corrosive environments where product lifetime is important. It is commonly used for pipes and valves in the chemical and petrochemical industries. It is also used in reactor vessels in the chemical and nuclear industries.
There are many Hastelloy grades, but C276 is one of the most popular grades. This grade is commonly used in the harsh environments mentioned above as well as paper and pulp production and waste treatment.
Benefits and Applications of Hastelloy C276
- Nickel alloy characteristics have been connected to Hastelloy Alloy Round Bars in various circumstances. It’s a nickel-chromium superalloy with a lot of molybdenum. Tungsten and iron have regulated levels as well as minimal carbon content. Because of low carbon content carbide deposition is restricted during heat treatment and welding.
- It implies that in welded systems, the metal maintains high pitting and crevice corrosion resistivity. Other materials compared to Hastelloy C276 Round Bars may weld weaker after being heated during the welding and making them more resistant to corrosion. This material is exceptionally resistant to general corrosion, including stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion.
- A wide range of features including chemical and flue gas desulfurization equipment is often used by Hastelloy C276 Round Bars.
Benefits of Hastelloy C22
The Hastelloy C22 is one of the major corrosion-resistant alloys and a higher percentage of chromium in this material makes it more corrosion-resistant than the rest. It is the right choice for oxidizing environments and helps in improving the life of the material greatly. The alloy C22 also shows exceptional resistance to acetic anhydride, formic, acetic, and hot or contaminated inorganic or organic acids.
- Resists stress corrosion cracking along with crevice and pitting corrosion.
- Exceptional resistance to reducing and oxidizing media
- High resistance to a wide variety of environments in the chemical process industries that include string oxidizing material such as ferric acids, brine solutions, and seawater.
