What is Inconel Material?
Inconel materials are nickel-chrome-based superalloys. Inconel has high corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, strength at high temperatures, and creep resistance. Inconel is able to withstand elevated temperatures and extremely corrosive environments.
Composition of Inconel Alloy
With grades, Inconel material’s chemical makeup changes. Being a nickel permit, the nickel content is higher. The following substances are also found in Inconel alloy material:
- Chromium
- Iron
- Cobalt
- Molybdenum
- Titanium
- Niobium
Properties of Inconel Material
- Inconel is characterized by its ability to withstand very high temperatures.
- Inconel alloy maintains excellent strength even at elevated temperatures.
- When heated, a substantial and durable protective oxide layer forms that offers exceptional corrosion resistance even at high temperatures.
- Inconel material is the best option for very high-temperature situations where steel material fails due to creep.
Difference between Monel and Inconel
- Another metal made of an alloy of nickel and copper is monel. Monel, a nickel-chromium alloy, can withstand high heat and pressure just like Inconel.
- Monel metal consists of a group of nickel alloys that have strong corrosion resistance to chemicals, heat, and other agents including seawater.
- Monel has been used in applications ranging from aerospace applications during the Space Race to the World War dog tags. Although the nickel alloy is more expensive than the majority of other alloys, it is nonetheless widely utilized today.
What are the Uses of Inconel Material?
Oil & Gas Extraction
Inconel is ideally used in the oil and gas extraction industries due to its high temperature resistance and oxidation resilient properties. The oil and gas industries essential a super alloy metal, like Inconel, that can withstand extreme environments and volatile, corrosive gasses.
The processing systems needed for natural gas production benefit particularly from the usage of the super alloy Inconel 625. Inconel 625 is frequently used for the separation of extracted fluids or in line steel transfer pipework due to its exceptionally excellent thermal fatigue strength and oxidation resistance.
Heat Treat Applications
Inconel is renowned for its resistance to high and low temperatures; at high temperatures, it maintains sufficient tensile strength to continue supporting moderate loads (Inconel 625 maintains 13.3 ksi tensile strength at 2,000°F). This makes Inconel—which compares favorably to stainless steel alloys like Grade 304, 316, and 330 SS—the ideal basket material for heat treat applications.
Rapid Temperature Changes
Several manufacturing methods may combine high and low temperature processes in rapid succession. Most Inconel alloys retain excellent oxidation resistance at high and low temperatures, allowing a single basket made from Inconel to be used in processes where temperatures vary between near-cryogenic lows and heat treatment highs.
